Longwall Mining
The damage you see in this photo wasn't caused by an earthquake, flood, hurricane or tsunami. The cracked road and sunken land is the result of a man made process called Longwall mining. Unlike traditional room-and-pillar mining, Longwall mining extracts all of the coal beneath the surface, leaving no coal or "pillars" behind to support the earth above.
